Umbrel has announced umbrelOS 2.0, which it calls its biggest update to the home-server OS yet. It arrives September 22. The announcement is short on purpose: Umbrel says every feature deserves its own story, and it’ll tell them properly on the 22nd.
What’s in it
The list: a Photos app and a new iOS app, Machines, multiple users, an MCP server for AI agents, a Storage Manager with FailSafe that Umbrel calls RAID, support for NVIDIA, AMD and Intel GPUs, custom app folders, and a new Mac app. All of it in a new design. Umbrel says 2.0 is its answer to years of suggestions from its forum.
How to try it
On an existing Umbrel, update to umbrelOS 1.7.4 first, then enroll under Settings > Advanced > umbrelOS Beta Program. For a fresh install, download umbrelOS 2.0 beta 1 from Umbrel’s downloads page. The iOS app is on TestFlight. Umbrel asks testers to post what they find in the announcement thread.
My read
The changes that matter most are the ones Umbrel describes least. Multiple users and RAID storage are what most change the box, and Machines is one word with no explanation. The post carries no release notes or upgrade caveats; those arrive with the release. The thread is already carrying reports from people running the beta.
The beta is open now; the stable release arrives September 22.
